A reimagined sequence from Otto Preminger's BONJOUR TRISTESSE.
Jean Seberg breaks the fourth wall and looks directly into the camera lens and by slowing down the footage to an almost imperceptible movement, and stripping all of the original sound design away, I have reimagined memories the character Cecile might have had, drawing on research from the original French novel by Francoise Sagan, and Athur Laurents' screenplay.
The sound is built up again, layer by layer, all foley is new. Some sound is resynced (Francois' singing) and some sound is displaced (the voices), but most sound is new.
Using text from Irene Ash's English translation, key phrases are presented, not like subtitles, they do not offer an alternative understanding of what is already being said, this text provides an additional communication. Perhaps somewhere in between a book and a film, like a moving graphic novel.
Manipulated footage is BONJOUR TRISTESSE Dir. Otto Preminger 1958 Columbia Pictures
Some of the text is from BONJOUR TRISTESSE Francoise Sagan, Translated to English by Irene Ash 1955
Additional imagery is filmed by Annie on iphone using macro lens and binoculars
