I have finished a new version of the film, and it's running at less than 3 minutes. I was delighted with it, but after I showed it to Steve, he didn't say anything, and then said it was 'pretty good'. When pressed, he said the cut up sound at the beginning was odd, and seemed too 'present' to be a recollected memory. We talked about whether this should be made more obvious with the sound of reel to reel tape rewinding and forwarding, but this seemed overly contrived, so instead, we added reverb and some crackle to make the sound appear distant, old and 'found'. This works better.
I am having a bit of a crisis, thinking that the film is becoming more and more minimal, which I guess, is what the process is - it become more and more refined to the point of perhaps just one image that it manipulated and changed in accordance with the narrative.
But then, why not just make an audio piece? What is the point of visuals?
I realise, reading back through the blog, that so many ideas are now defunct, but there are clear ones that remain:
1. The 3 steps into her mind.
2. The idea of barely there shadowy figures.
3. The viewpoint from Cécile's eyes (still there).
I don't think I am entirely happy with the film at the moment, I think this is a process, and this film is one version of it. I am sure I am going more minimal.
